International Museum Day is celebrated on 18 May each year at museums
throughout the world to draw attention to the work being done by these heritage
institutions. This day has been celebrated all over the world since 1977. Museums
and Memory is the theme of International Museum Day 2011, to highlight the
important role played by museums in storing memory and telling stories.
Many of the South African artworks in Oliewenhuis Art Museum’s Permanent
Collection are expressions of our collective cultural heritage and memories of our
country’s past.
Oliewenhuis Art Museum will be celebrating International Museum Day by offering
two free, fun workshops by sculptor Gordon Froud on 17 May 2011. The first
workshop will take place from 10:15 to 12:15 and the second from 13:15 to 15:15.
The workshops are suitable for participants of all ages – from 10 to 100 – who will
have the wonderful opportunity to create their own special ‘virus’. The theme of the
workshop emphasises the use of modules to construct form.
Gordon Froud explains the workshops as follows: ”Using viruses, bacteria, crystals
and geometric models, participants will learn to make 3D forms. Once these have
been made, the participants will decorate and embellish the forms to create their own
sculptures that will remind them of my viral sculptures currently on show as part of
the PLAYOFF exhibition in the Reservoir at Oliewenhuis Art Museum. Participants
will learn planning, cutting, construction, decoration and embellishment in the
process of making their own sculptures which they will take home with them.”
Spaces are limited so please book your place as soon as possible by contacting
