WHAT IS THE CONSTRUCT YOUR SKIN COMPETITION?
Construct your skin is an event hosted by the Fractal committee. The competition, previously known as Shed your skin was successfully held in 2003. This year, Fractal (an ad hoc committee of Oliewenhuis Art Museum) has decided to revive and host the event again. All art departments of South African tertiary institutions, high schools, fashion schools, hair design studios and the general public are invited to participate. Construct your Skin is a fashion show held in the sculpture garden of Oliewenhuis; an event which draws considerable media attention where fashion photographers, videographers and even South African celebrities make an appearance. Fractal is very proud to announce that Wiehahn (leaders in formwork and scaffolding technology) is the major sponsor of this year’s Construct your Skin event. In keeping with the theme of construction, a compulsory requirement for all participants is to incorporate the theme of construction/scaffolding into your fashion design/artwork/dress.
The central objective of this competition is that participants of Construct your Skin create a complex artwork that is suited to the contours of the human body. Your utmost challenge is to create a functional, wearable sculpture which expresses one or more of the following themes: 1) construction, 2) reconstruction, and 3) deconstruction. Keep in mind that even sewing a dress is a construction of textiles and fibers which creates a three dimensional item.
Think creatively (in terms of medium and theme) when you plan your sculpture!
